Typographic Poster: Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, Cindy Sherman is an American artist whose art portrays themes, such as identity, celebrity and gender, through self photographs. Although creating glamorous type characters, she takes more interest in the grotesque side of people. Sherman’s work displays and dismantles the artificial stereotypes of individuals surrounding her with the use of makeup, prosthetics, wigs and props. Below are some of her photographs.

Below are some rough sketches and ideas for my typographic poster
Now onto the process of creating the poster, I knew I wanted to write out Cindy Sherman's name on a mirror and smear it to go along with her "grotesque" photographs. First, I wrote on paper with red lipstick to feel out how it writes. In both cursive and upper case letters, I wasn't too sure if I liked the way it looked as the names wouldn't line up perfectly or it would be at a diagonal angle. However, my next idea was to only write out her initials, and as I did, I was more interested in going this route.
Since I wear a lot of liquid lipsticks, I decided to use those instead since they seemed like they'd write better. I used an orange, mauve type of lip stick to see how the initials would look in a different color. It wasn't too bad, but I wasn't satisfied. I moved onto a dark mauve, red color, and I liked it much better. It took me a few times to get the letters and smears to look like what I envisioned. I eventually got it down! I moved forward with the details of the poster. I chose to include Sherman's signature, and I used the typeface Abril Titling regular and bold.
